Buying a gift takes special consideration. And we’ve all been on both sides of the exchange, whether it’s gone well or not so well. You know when the wrapping paper comes off whether a present is a winner. In our Gifted & Approved series, we tell the stories of those winners, the best presents our editors have either given or received. We hope they provide a little inspiration and advice as you go about your holiday shopping and gift search.
I don’t think most people can say this, but I remember my very best experience of falling asleep.
It was in the solid darkness of the Guatemalan rainforest, surrounded by heavy rainfall as the screams of howler monkeys and songs of toucans lulled me to sleep. Romantic, soothing, mysterious, and natural — it was the most ideal sleep of my life.
Guess what? The nightlife in New Jersey, where I live, is just not the same. Car lights and dogs barking do not help me get to sleep nearly as well as bedtime in the jungle. Last year, to get that magical nighttime vibe in my own bedroom, I sprung for a Hatch Restore. It’s a toaster-size machine with programmable lights (peach, white, blue, and more) and sounds (like the gentle rumbling of trains, birds chirping, lapping ocean waves, and a soft voice reading stories) designed to usher you on to sleep. There have been some nights when my Hatch has almost brought me right back to that night in Tikal.

For example, you can wake up over the course of a half hour with slowly brightening cool peach light (Sunrise of a Flower Orchard) accompanied by bird songs. Or you might choose Conquering Fuji color with Calm Ocean sounds. The Hatch supports you in creating a routine to help you rest and rise with less stress.
