Our Best Overall pick, the Oribe Shampoo for Brilliance & Shine, comes recommended by Manzella for its hydrating, sulfate-free formula that’s suitable for most hair types. For a more budget-friendly option, Story suggests the Herbal Essences Biorenew Argan Oil Repair Shampoo, which contains argan oil to nourish hair and control frizz.
Hair Types To select the best anti-frizz shampoo for you, it’s important to consider your hair type. “For those with thick hair, look for a sulfate-free formula to avoid weighing down hair,” says Story. “Fine-haired individuals should opt for a lightweight formula to add volume, whereas those with curly hair should choose a shampoo specifically designed for their curl pattern.”
Niekamp adds that curly hair tends to experience frizz more than straight hair due to the shape of the hair follicles where they are often drier.
Regardless of your hair type, it is a best practice to avoid shampoos containing sulfates to prevent any unnecessary irritation and reduction of natural oils.
Ingredients Knowing what’s inside your anti-frizz shampoo is key to ensure you’re putting products on your hair that will nourish it as opposed to damage it. Story recommends opting for shampoos containing argan oil, coconut oil, and shea butter, as they prevent frizz. “Furthermore, you should look for shampoos containing ingredients that are conditioning such as amino acids, aloe vera and natural oils such as safflower, argan and moringa,” adds Manzella.
Questions and Answers What should you avoid in a shampoo for frizzy hair? When it comes to the ingredients you should avoid in a shampoo for frizzy hair both Story and Manzella agree that you should steer clear of alcohols and sulfates. You should also steer clear of heavy silicones including dimethicone and cyclopentasiloxane if you can. “They may make your hair feel shiny and healthy but in reality act as a wax barrier suffocating your hair not allowing natural oils to penetrate the cuticle,” explains Manzella.
In addition to avoiding alcohols, sulfates, and heavy silicones, “you want to look out for products that advertise themselves as clarifying or cleansing,” says Niekamp. “Those are products that are going to be oil stripping.”
How do you keep hair from getting frizzy after washing it? To keep hair from getting frizzy after washing it, Niekamp recommends adding a hydrating deep conditioner to your post-wash hair care routine. “Apply conditioner from your middle to the ends of your hair, put it up in a clip, and allow it to sit on your hair for at least five minutes,” says Niekamp.
After getting out of the shower or washing your hair, she adds that adding a leave-in conditioner to your hair is key in most cases. “You want to be using a leave-on conditioner that's extra hydrating,” advises Niekamp.
Story recommends towel drying your hair without rubbing it. But if you do choose or need to blow dry your hair after washing it, Niekamp recommends adding an oil to keep the hair moisturized.
